ELEGANT TURN OF THE CENTURY LADIES HATS; AN INCREDIBLE LACE WEDDING GOWN

I've found more pictures of some absolutely fabulous hats in our families' photos, and would like to share them. I've started reading about the history of hats, especially from about 1890 to 1920; but it is complex and I have a ways to go, so I'm just presenting photos. I simply don't know enough to comment on the hats, at this point!

Bridal Elegance and a hilarious photo

Today I'm featuring some bridal finery, some of it quite unusual. First
the above image.  I believe it's the oldest, though as usual Lena didn't put any dates or other  information on it.  In many, many of the oldest photos the guy is sitting comfortably and the poor woman is standing.   Without any other explanations needed, that shows the status of women at the time.
On the other hand, the bosom and its decorations in this photo look so heavy that she may have needed him to lean on.

In the next picture, these poor young souls look extremely unhappy. I suspect it might be a "shotgun" wedding by the groom's demeanor. The bride is lovely (and has that tiny waist!) but also doesn't look thrilled.
I'd kind of like to know if the young woman behind them is holding a pistol to each of their backs! She looks happy enough.

In the next photo  I do know who the bride is. I thought she was the guys
daughter, she looks so young.  But we have a later picture of them, him in his WWI uniform with his arm around her; she looks about 10 years older in that photo. Talk about robbing the cradle! 

Next is a 1934 bride, in what is, for us, a pretty traditional wedding gown. And she looks more like a happy bride!:

 The next picture isn't a traditional gown, but this type of wedding was seen very often in WWII. My parent's wedding picture are almost identical:

The final picture is just a hilarious rear view that was in with Lena's pictures. No identification, but no caption needed:

New Antique Family Photos

These photos are from my mom's side of the family. The first photo is my Great Great Grandma Wells. This was a postcard. The back of the card is included. I am told that she was a kind, gentle woman but she looks tough as nails in this photo.

 The next photo is my Grandpa and Grandma Daugherty on their wedding day; My grandma lived into her 90s, and worked until she was 89 as a tax accountant, then decided she had "other things she wanted to do!

I love her hairdo and dress. She looks so elegant.  My very best memories of growing up were staying with these grandparents in Salem, Oregon in the 1940's and '50's.

These were my grandparents with their family--he brought the two kids on the right into the marriage.  The girl with her arm around my grandma was my mom.

One more photo; my grandpa always wore these overalls. He must have just come home from his Post Office work (on his bicycle) and put the overalls on. He was the gentlest, kindest man I knew!   They grew their own veggies and fruits on their farm, the food they served was wonderful.
The third story of their home was a boarding house for college students. They were always cooking and baking.


One funny story, lots of people used the electric clothes ringers then, loading the clothes directly from the washer into the ringer from which it dropped into a bin. My grandma said a friend of hers was doing this naked, and her tit got caught in a wringer!  She didn't go into detail about what happened afterward,  but I can imagine it wasn't fun!

So here is the wedding picture for Lena and Charles, in 1903. They certainly do not look joyful, although photos took a long time then and people rarely kept smiling through the whole process.

   This is the last evidence we have that Charles existed. A baby, Colon, was born the next year but we don't have the date. Wait until you see his pictures as a baby!!
